John Lark

by Simon Parker

John Lark loved his boat. He loved her shape, the pleasing curve of her bow. He loved the way she sat on the water. He loved how every inch of her was made for the job she was ordained to do. He loved her history, too. Seventy seasons afloat, older than John by a mile, yet as nimble as her dipping day. Someone once said, John knew, that the whole history of humanity is hammered into the hull of every wooden boat. And that always seemed pretty wise to John.

Three linked stories follow the life and beliefs of a simple man.
