Seven Stars

by Simon Parker

A Cornish Christmas Play For Voices.

The thing we children looked forward to most about Christmas Day back then wasn’t the presents, but the visitors: the family and friends who were sometimes never seen from one year to the next, though until we grew older and worked out some of the muddled relationships of those seated round the groaning Christmas table, we had absolutely no way of telling if Aunt Hepsebah was our mother’s sister, if Aunt Winnie was our father’s brother’s wife, or if Uncle Archie and Aunt Kitty were simply a couple who had served our parents tea during their annual caravan holiday to Hayle Towans. Inevitably, our allegiances were not built along blood lines, but guided and steered by far deeper motives, such as quality of gifts, unwavering kindness and the ability to pass on a good yarn – the weirder the better.
