Pioneer

by Simon Parker and Tony Doc Shiels

In 1899, Cornwall’s fishing fleet prepared for the new century with the introduction of the first working vessel to be built with an engine. The 47ft boat was constructed by Paynters of St Ives and aptly named Pioneer. She worked out of Newlyn until the winter of 1983, when she was badly damaged in a storm. Pioneer – PZ277 – was laid up for many years and slowly deteriorated until restored at a boatyard in Hayle in the 1990s. Pioneer, a story for children, was written to mark the centenary of her launch, and is illustrated by Tony Doc Shiels.
