Fogou

by Simon Parker

Who were the ancestors – the men, women and children from past millennia who once occupied the ground we now call home, and who raised the great stone monuments we feel compelled to gaze at? We may understand something of the bare bones of their physical existence, but know little, with certainty, about their thoughts, motivations or beliefs. This essay does not attempt to add to the great library of archaeological speculation. Instead, it examines our enduring fascination with the past. By describing a lifetime of unscholarly dabbling, Simon Parker attempts to fathom why we continue to be drawn to the stones.
